Just Passed Your ITI? Here's How to Actually Land a Real Job
You spent two years in the workshop, got your NCVT or SCVT certificate, and now you are staring at a blank screen wondering what to do next. You are not alone. Thousands of ITI graduates face this exact situation every year. The good news is that the demand for skilled trades in India has never been higher — you just need to know how to position yourself correctly.
Which Trades Are in the Highest Demand Right Now?
Before you start applying, it helps to know where the market is hottest.
Electrician — This is consistently the most in-demand ITI trade across India. Metro rail projects, solar power plants, automotive factories, and commercial construction all need qualified electricians. If you hold an Electrician trade certificate, you have options in almost every city.
Fitter — Manufacturing plants, defence establishments, and heavy engineering companies are always looking for skilled fitters. The role is physically demanding but the pay progression is strong once you cross three years of experience.
Welder (MIG/TIG/Arc) — Shipbuilding, oil and gas pipelines, automotive body shops, and structural fabrication units need welders constantly. If you have specialised in TIG welding, your earning potential is significantly higher.
Turner / Machinist — With CNC machines replacing older lathes, machinists who understand both manual and CNC operations are extremely valuable. Companies will often pay for additional CNC training if you show aptitude.
COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant) — Government offices, banks, and private companies need COPA-trained staff for data entry, basic IT support, and office operations. This trade also opens doors to BPO and back-office roles.
Wireman, Plumber, Refrigeration and AC Mechanic — These trades have strong demand in the construction and real estate sector, which is booming across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.
Your First Resume: Keep It Simple and Specific
Plant managers and HR teams do not have time to read a multi-page document. Here is what your one-page resume must include:
- Your full name and contact number at the top — make it easy to call you
- Trade name and certificate type — write "ITI Electrician (NCVT)" or "ITI Fitter (SCVT)" clearly
- Machines and tools you can operate — list them specifically: lathe, drilling machine, multimeter, vernier caliper, MIG welder, etc.
- Any apprenticeship or internship — even a 6-month factory attachment counts
- Your preferred work locations — mention 2 to 3 cities you are willing to relocate to
Do not add a photograph unless the job posting specifically asks for one. Do not pad the resume with irrelevant school subjects or hobbies.
Where to Register and Apply
The fastest way to get noticed is to register on a job portal that specialises in skilled trades. General job sites are flooded with white-collar applications and your profile can get buried.
Platforms like DesiRojgar are built specifically for ITI graduates, 10th and 12th pass candidates, and skilled workers. Registration is completely free. Once your profile is live, employers and placement coordinators can find you directly and call you.
When you register, always fill in your exact trade and certificate type, your current city and the cities you are willing to work in, and your experience level honestly — fresher is perfectly fine.
Clearing the Factory Floor Interview
Most manufacturing companies will ask you to do a practical trade test in addition to a basic interview.
Arrive early and dress neatly. You do not need formal office clothes, but clean clothes and closed-toe shoes show that you take safety seriously.
Know your safety basics. Before you touch any machine or tool, put on the PPE they give you — safety glasses, gloves, or a hard hat. Interviewers notice this immediately.
Be honest about what you can and cannot do. If you have only worked on a manual lathe and they ask about CNC, say so clearly. Companies would rather train someone honest than hire someone who overstates their skills.
Prepare for basic theory questions. Common questions include: What is the difference between AC and DC current? What is the purpose of earthing? How do you read a vernier caliper? Revise your ITI textbook basics the night before.
Salary Expectations: What Is Realistic?
As a fresher ITI graduate, your starting salary will typically be in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month in most Tier 2 cities, and Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 in metro areas. Treat the first one to two years as a paid apprenticeship where you are building real-world experience.
Once you have two to three years of experience, your salary can jump to Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000 depending on your trade and the industry. Specialised welders and CNC machinists with five or more years of experience can earn Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 or more.
Always check that your employer is depositing PF (Provident Fund) on your behalf. Your UAN (Universal Account Number) should be active. This is your legal right as an employee.
Avoiding Scams: Protect Yourself
Never pay any upfront fee to secure a job interview. Legitimate companies and genuine job portals do not charge candidates. If someone asks you to pay any amount to process your application, walk away.
Be suspicious of WhatsApp messages promising government jobs. Real government recruitment happens through official channels like SSC, Railways, or state PSC boards — not through random WhatsApp forwards.
Verify the company before you travel. If a company is asking you to travel to another city for an interview, look them up on Google and ask for a formal interview call letter before you book your travel.
Building Your Career Long-Term
Getting your first job is just the beginning. Ask for a formal appointment letter on your first day. Keep copies of all your certificates. Learn basic English communication — even a few sentences can open doors to supervisory roles faster. Consider an apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act for structured training and a stipend.
The skilled trades sector in India is growing fast. Infrastructure projects, renewable energy, defence manufacturing, and the automotive industry are all expanding. Your ITI certificate is a real qualification that employers need.
